UNSUNG HORRORS HORROR GIVES BACK 2026: Number One Fan (1995)

Each October, the Unsung Horrors podcast does a month of themed movies. This year, they will once again set up a fundraiser for Best Friends, which works to save the lives of cats and dogs across America, giving pets second chances and providing them with happy homes.

Today’s theme: Mary Woronov

Jane Simpson also directed Little Witches and tons of music videos for groups like Concrete Blonde (“Everybody Knows,” “Walking In London,” “God Is a Bullet”), Chaka Khan and Patti LaBelle. Working from a script by Anthony L. Greene (Angelfist), she tells the story of Zane Berry (Chad McQueen), an actor who should be marrying Holly Newman (Catherine Mary Stewart). Instead, he’s hooking up with Blair (Renee Allman, The Stoned Age, Death Match), a girl from his hometown who’s way too young for him and has been in love with him since before it was appropriate.

Sure, we’ve seen it all before, but have we seen it with cameos from Paul Bartel as a director, Mary Woronov as a wedding coordinator, Hoyt Axton as a cop, and Dick Miller just showing up to play a Dick Miller character? Is this a nepo baby movie, since it has not only the son of Steve McQueen, but also Charles Matthau, the son of Walter? And wait, is that Eric Da Re, son of Aldo Ray? It sure is.

In no way does the male protagonist deserve a happy ending, but he gets one, even in a female-directed movie. I don’t know what to tell you. It doesn’t make me happy, but life’s like this, in the words of Avril.

You can watch this on Tubi.

We've bought so many movies that this is the only way that we can justify buying more. Stay tuned for our podcast and to read all we have to say.
