Star Trek is central in so much of my life. I have formed lasting friendships with people all the way back to high school through my love of the show, and it’s been pivotal to my life. That said, I haven’t kept up much because, I have to confess, I am and always will be a fan of the original series instead of anything else.
I was a kid who hid his eyes from the Gorn in the closing credits, who watched the show every single time it aired in syndication, had all the Mego toys and begged his parents to take him to not only see the endless running time of the first movie but also get a Star Trek: The Motion Picture Happy Meal the same night. I was wondering if I was dying, and this was how my family decided to tell me. That’s how big of a deal it was.
Having the entire run of the show in one form, a show that I know too much about and feel as if William Shatner is talking right at me in his classic Saturday Night Live sketch, is something I could never dream of when I was a science fiction-obsessed child. But here it is: this gigantic box of disc upon disc, and I can look across the room, see it on my shelf and be content.
My favorite episodes? Thanks for asking! “The Enemy Within,” “Arena,” “The City on the Edge of Forever,” “A Piece of the Action” and, well, look I coul go on all day.
If you’re a fan, you already own all of these, but if you haven’t upgraded, this sixtieth anniversary collection is really nice. And if you haven’t gotten into the show, this is a great way to get started. Remember: Physical media is the only media that you own.
