The Hummel family—Audrey (Lana Hirsch), her dad Sam (Craig Wasson), and mom Edith (Lisa Fugard)—have their quiet, seemingly normal life upended when Uncle Richard (Larry Pine) drags home a dust-caked dollhouse from an abandoned property, hinting at the episode’s eerie and suspenseful tone.
Audrey becomes instantly obsessed with the inhabitants, dubbing them The Geezenstacks. She starts weaving elaborate, increasingly violent narratives for these tiny plastic figures, and like clockwork, the real world starts mirroring her playtime. Dad Sam is the only one who notices the pattern and how the mishaps, the odd noises and the way reality is bending are starting to ruin their existence, but no one wants to listen.
Uncle Richard returns the next morning to find the home gutted. All the furniture was gone, as if the house itself were being prepped for a sale. The only thing left is the dollhouse. When Richard calls out for the family, he hears their voices, but they’re warped, sluggish and impossibly small. He finds his kin trapped inside the dollhouse, turned into stiff, lifeless figures, frozen in a miniature version of their own home.
Then, a real estate agent named Louise Filler (Stephanie Cassel) shows up at the empty house, spots the toy and opens it. She finds a doll version of Uncle Richard already inside, and nested within that dollhouse is an even smaller, more sinister one. It’s a fractal of hopelessness—an endless loop of domestic entrapment.
Based on a Fredric Brown story, this episode is directed by Bill Travers. It was written by Nancy Doyne, who also wrote the Tales from the Crypt episode “Mute Witness to Murder.“
