Following up on his 2022 biographical film, director Baz Luhrmann delivers something entirely unique in the Elvis canon with EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert. Rather than a traditional documentary or standard concert film, this project functions as a staggering archival resurrection. The production is built upon a monumental discovery: 68 lost boxes of 35mm and 8mm film outtakes from Elvis: That’s the Way It Is and Elvis on Tour, unearthed deep within the Warner Bros. film archives inside Kansas salt mines.
Because this treasure trove of footage came without sound, Luhrmann’s team spent two years meticulously restoring the visuals and syncing them with newly discovered audio sources, including a rare 45-minute recording of Elvis candidly reflecting on his own life story. The result is a vibrant, unfiltered look at The King at the absolute peak of his showmanship, capturing both legendary stage performances and raw, intimate behind-the-scenes moments without ever resorting to cheap cynicism or parody.
The stunning audio-visual restoration was paired with a companion soundtrack album featuring fresh mixes, remixes by Jamieson Shaw and Pnau and orchestral elements from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It features 26 Elvis favorites, including “Hound Dog,” “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” “In the Ghetto,” “Suspicious Minds,” and more.
It may be the closest we ever get to seeing Elvis in concert. I liked Luhrmann’s take on the concerts in his Elvis film, so this is truly interesting to see what he does with all of this footage.
