Featuring murderous mini-breaks and sun, sea, sand and psychos, these gory getaways feature everything from island paradises full of monsters and mutants to nature breaks from the rat race that will be the death of you. This curated collection features historical epics, time capsule slices of life and period pieces all featuring blood, swords, romance, political intrigue, unforgettable events, crazed killers and flying fighters. The past has never been as entertaining, or dangerous, as it is in You’re History. Titles Include: Eros + Massacre, Vengeance is Mine and Khrustalyov My Car!

Running Time also appears on this day.

July 21: Josh Ruben Selects has the actor-writer-director of Scare Me, Werewolves Within, Death to 2021 and A Wounded Fawn share his ARROW picks. “First, ARROW asked if I’d list my favorite movies currently streaming on their epic service… then came a flood of shame… cult films? Have I seen any!? Am I a BAD CINEPHILE?! And yet, there they emerged, one after another in alphabetical order, from Basket Case onward came title after title, some of which I haven’t thought about since I was a wee one. Enjoy a taste of the delightfully dark and salacious gems, many of which molded me at too young an age.” Titles include Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, Bad Moon and The Guyver.

July 24: The Blood Money Collection has $10,000 Blood Money, Find a Place to Die and Matalo! (Kill Him).

July 28: Sam Ashurst Selects has ARROW picks from the director of Frankenstein’s Creature, the writer/director of A Little More Flesh and A Little More Flesh II, and the co-host of the Arrow Video podcast. “Being asked to curate a selection of films for Arrow’s streaming service is like getting to break into your favorite video store after hours to pull from the best shelves. Limited to twenty* rentals, this would be the stack coming home with me. So, brace yourself for crazy kung-fu, stoic heroes, lots of female rage, and some of the coolest movies ever made.” Titles include Boxer’s Omen, Day of Anger and Burst City.

KINO LORBER BLU RAY BOX SET: Mr. Wong Collection

Mr. Wong, who appeared in twenty magazine stories, four issues of the Dell comic book Popular Comics and six movies — five of which are on this set — was said to be six feet tall, educated at Yale University and had an American-looking face. As an agent of the United States Treasury Department, he’s able to go between the world of white people and the secretive Tongs in San Francisco to solve cases that no one else can.

Aided by Captain William Street and reporter Roberta Logan, Mr. Wong is the star of this Kino Lorber box set. It has five movies on it and all look really great. They’re short and sweet — often under 70 minutes — and were made for Monogram Pictures, one of smallest studios in the golden age of Hollywood.

The films include:

Mr. Wong, Detective (1938): A series of murders leads Mr. Wong to an international spy ring that wants to bring poison overseas to aid the enemies of America.

The Mystery of Mr. Wong (1939): The Eye of the Daughter of the Moon, a rare precious gem, keeps getting stolen, leaving dead bodies of those foolhardy enough to purloin it.

Mr. Wong In Chinatown (1939): A secret plot to buy airplanes turns into murder, but Mr. Wong is on the case.

The Fatal Hour (1940): A cop is killed and it leads to stolen diamonds.

Doomed to Die (1940): A Romeo and Juliet romance, murder and actual footage of a boat sinking that cost hundreds of human lives.

The Kino Lorber blu ray release of the Mr. Wong Collection has new HD masters of each of the five films — with a 2K scan of the fine grains — and this comes with audio commentary for Mr. Wong, Detective by Tom Weaver and Larry Blamire.

I had a great time with this set, as the movies fly by and present a wise detective who always gets the job done. Now, we could argue that Boris Karloff is as far from Asian as Bela Lugosi — who also played a Mr. Wong, an evil one in 1934’s The Mysterious Mr. Wong — but we should try to enjoy this for what it is.

You can get the Mr. Wong Collection from Kino Lorber.

ARROW BOX SET RELEASE: Enter the Video Store – Empire of Screams

In 1983, entrepreneurial producer and director Charles Band founded Empire International Pictures, which would go on to make some of the most memorable and beloved genre movies of the 1980s. If you haunted the video store like I did, you know that there were always Empire boxes on the shelves, packed with catchy titles, outlandish art and always the best time.

Today, Arrow Video has released a box set that has five of Empire’s best-known films.

The Dungeonmaster: Computer programmer Paul Bradford is sucked into a fantasy world by Mestema, a demonic sorcerer in search of a worthy opponent. The set has three different versions of the film via seamless branching: the US theatrical version (The Dungeonmaster), the pre-release version and the international version (Ragewar) plus extras like new audio commentary with star Jeffrey Byron, moderated by film critics Matty Budrewicz and Dave Wain from The Schlock Pit, a new interview with Byron, trailers and an image gallery.

Dolls: A group of strangers finds themselves forced to seek shelter at the isolated home of an old toymaker and his wife, only to find that the puppets and dolls have a vicious life of their own. Extras include new audio commentary by David Decoteau, an archive audio commentary with director Stuart Gordon and writer Ed Naha and a third archive audio commentary with cast members Carolyn Purdy-Gordon, Stephen Lee, Carrie Lorraine, and Ian Patrick Williams; a new interview with editor Lee Percy, a making-of, film-to-storyboard comparisons, trailers and an image gallery.

Cellar Dweller: A comic book artist (Jeffrey Combs) with a penchant for the macabre takes inspiration from an ancient tome and unleashes an ancient evil. Extras include new audio commentary by special make-up effects artist Michael Dea, moderated by film critics Matty Budrewicz and Dave Wain from The Schlock Pit, a video appreciation of special make-up effects artist John Carl Buechler, a new interview with special make-up effects artist Michael Deak, the original sales sheet and production notes, a VHS trailer, an Empire Pictures trailer reel and image galleries, including behind-the-scenes photos courtesy of special make-up effects artist Michael Deak.

Arena: In the far future of 4038, a short order cook becomes the first human in fifty years to compete in an intergalactic boxing event on the far side of the universe. Extras include new audio commentary with director Peter Manoogian, moderated by film critics Matty Budrewicz and Dave Wain from The Schlock Pit, an alternative full frame presentation, new interviews with co-screenwriter Danny Bilson and special make-up effects artist Michael Deak, a trailer and an image gallery.

Robot Jox: Stuart Gordon directs Empire Pictures’ most ambitious movie yet, as men and women pilot giant machines in gladiatorial battle to settle international disputes over territory. Extras include two archive audio commentaries (one with director Stuart Gordon and a second with associate effects director Paul Gentry, mechanical effects artist Mark Rappaport and stop-motion animator Paul Jessell), new interviews with Gary Graham and Anne-Marie Johnson as well as a new appreciation of stop motion animator David Allen, an archival interview with actor Paul Koslo, the original sales sheet and production notes, a trailer and image galleries, including behind-the-scenes stills courtesy of associate effects director Paul Gentry.

This incredible set has 1080p blu ray versions of all five movies, amazing limited edition packaging featuring newly commissioned artwork by Laurie Greasley, reversible sleeves featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Ilan Sheady, double-sided posters for each film featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Ilan Sheady, 15 postcard-sized reproduction artcards, an Arrow Video store “membership card” and an 80-page perfect bound book featuring new writing on the films by Lee Gambin, Dave Jay, Megan Navarro, and John Harrison plus select archival material.

This just might be the best home media release in 2023. Arrow always has so much in these sets and this is no exception, as this is absolutely overloaded with content that will keep you busy until Arrow releases volume two. May I suggest Terror VisionEliminatorsTrancersVicious Lips and Dr. Alien?

You can get this from MVD.

What’s On Arrow Player In June

June 2: Kick off the month with ARROW’s latest curation of Paul Joyce documentaries, this time looking at legendary filmmaker John Cassavetes, straight from the mouth of his friend and collaborator co-star Peter Falk (Columbo) in Out of the Shadows: The Films of John Cassavetes.

After a six-year directing hiatus, Monte Hellman sat down with Paul Joyce and just talked for an hour while Joyce filmed. The result is Plunging on Alone: Monte Hellman’s Life In a Day.

Ero Guro: The Japanese sub-genre of horror and pink films Ero Guro combines the erotic (ero) and the grotesque (guro) to deviant, decadent and unforgettable effect. ARROW’s Ero Guro collection features the unholy trinity of core Ero Guro films, Teruo Ishii’s Shogun’s Joy of Torture and Horrors of Malformed Men and Yasuzo Masumura’s Blind Beast, plus plenty more exciting, explicit and enticingly depraved delights to delve into.

June 6: Warriors Two

June 9: Martial Arts Mayhem

June 16: Splatter icon Eli Roth takes a stroll through the archives with Eli Roth Selects.. “I absolutely love Arrow and have been a collector of their editions for years, and Arrow Player is the most streamed channel in my house. I’ve seen a lot of Select lists, and while I agree with them, I wanted to highlight some that people might have otherwise overlooked.” Three of the movies are Basket Case, Contamination and Madhouse.

June 19:  ARROW plays Toru Murakawa’s Game Trilogy. Made at the end of the 1970s, Toru Murakawa’s Game Trilogy launched actor Yûsaku Matsuda as the Toei tough guy for a new generation. Matsuda was the definitive screen icon of the 1980s until his career was tragically cut short by cancer at the age of 40.

June 23: Cruel Jaws and Deep Blood.

Sci-fi Stunners: There are other worlds than these. Come and explore them in this collection of cybernetic, planet-probing, time-traveling, cosmos-trotting, aliens-zapping, virtual and far-too-real adventures in Sci-Fi Stunners, which is ARROW’s home world for the coolest cult science-fiction films in the galaxy. Movies include No Escape, Donnie Darko and Crimes of the Future.

June 30: Cosa Nostra Collection: The most American of Italian directors according to celebrated critic Paolo Mereghetti, Damiano Damiani (A Bullet for the General) nevertheless surveyed his own country’s mafia history unlike anyone before him, to critical and box office success. Full of twists and a fascinating meta-commentary on cinema, Damiani points the camera at himself and the genre as he investigates the social impact of mafia violence, a fitting end to this survey of Damiani’s Cosa Nostra. Titles include Day of the Owl, The Case is Closed: Forget It and How To Kill a Judge.
