Week 11 (Aug 30 – Sept 5) – Lost in the Static: SOV Horror Directed by Women: I dunno about you, but I wanna see more ladies directing gory, fucked-up SOV horror! Obviously this isn’t everything that’s out there; it’s just the ones discussed in Rachel Herb-Neterer’s book “Lost in the Static: The Untold Stories of Shot-On-Video Horror Directed by Women.”
Forget the damp, pine-needle-carpeted Pacific Northwest forests usually haunted by cryptozoology’s favorite elusive icon. Legend of the Sandsquatch swaps out the towering timber for a sun-bleached desert, proving that cryptids can thrive anywhere.
The story tracks young Sue (Hilary Schwartz), who launches an urgent search into the desert after her grandfather vanishes. Teaming up with her companion Garrett (Josh Cornell) and a handful of others, Sue soon realizes her grandfather wasn’t just lost—he was hunting. He had been tracking the Sandsquatch, a vicious desert-dwelling beast with a bloody history of wiping out anyone close to him. What starts out as a rescue mission quickly devolves into a desperate, crimson-covered fight for survival against a predator that calls the burning sands its home.
I know this was made in 2006, but all the music sounds like what I’d get if I told Suno to make me a song that sounds like My Chemical Romance. I guess some of the kills are good, and I hated nearly every character so much; I couldn’t wait to watch their lives be extinguished by the Sandsquatch.
You can watch this on Tubi.
