Week 6 (July 26 – Aug 1) – Generic Cartoon Tapes
“Every day is Saturday Morning at this Jo-Ann Fabric. Every space is liminal in Sylvester’s head (hand-drawn for PS1)” – Scumbalina
What the hell is this?
Ten years after Filmation disbanded, Lou Scheimer was approached by Dutch investment company Dreamweavers, N.V. to produce an animated series for young adults. At one point, there were plans for an ambitious franchise that would include the series, movies, music album and even a clothing line.
All we have is this.
Robi is the first girl born in cyberspace and grows up to become a DJ for Brenda Plump’s new virtual reality nightclub. However, her enemy XXX, a cyber being who wants to enter the real world to turn everyone into sex-crazed maniacs, finally tracks her down. Luckily, being born on the internet gives her the powers that she needs.
This looks like a kid cartoon, has funny animals in it and also has a BDSM club called Decadence, some minor nudity and a villain who rubs up on the main good guy, Reed Stokes, while also looking like a dominatrix. She also tends to eat her henchmen when they screw up.
For a cartoon where sex on the internet is a bad thing, this sure does lean into having a heroine and villain who are victims of the male gaze. It ends up feeling like an Adult Swim show made by older people who have no idea what the idea behind Adult Swim is.
Obviously, Scheimer was behind He-Man, so this looks a lot like that cartoon. It’s wild that this exists.
