COME BACK TO THE DRIVE-IN ASYLUM DOUBLE FEATURE!

Before we get started, here’s our schedule for October!

This Saturday, October 3, we’ll be live at 8 PM on the Groovy Doom Facebook page with two films — which we’ll get to in a bit.

We’re off the next week.

Then, we’re back Saturday, October 17 at 8 PM with two more movies to be named later.

Then off the next week.

And finally, we’ll be doing one movie on Halloween night at a different time, 11 PM! That’s also a surprise!

We don’t want to burn anyone out (and real life — like weddings, new houses, getting Drive-In Asylum the zine to print and so much more are happening), but we love the show and will be trying to stick to two shows a month.

Thanks for listening. Now let’s talk about this week! Two of Mario Bava’s films — Baron Blood and A Bay of Blood — and two of our favorite films!

What can you drink during this one? Good question.

Seeing Red (taken from the official Kraken site)

  • 2 oz. Kraken rum
  • 1/2 oz. lime juice
  • 3 oz. pineapple juice
  • Splash of grenadine
  1. Fill a glass with crushed ice.
  2. Add ingredients to glass except grenadine and stir.
  3. Add a splash of grenadine on top. Serve.

You can watch this on Shudder and Tubi.

You can sip on this during the movie.

Bay of Breeze (AKA Thirst of the Death Nerve)

  • 2 oz. cranberry juice
  • 2 oz. pineapple juice
  • 1 1/2 oz. vodka
  • 1/2 oz. lime juice
  1. Combine ingredients over ice. Stir and serve.

You can watch this on Shudder and YouTube.

See you on Saturday!

Back to the Drive-In Asylum Double Feature this Saturday!

This Saturday, we’re back to the digital drive-in after a week off and we’re bringing two incredibly odd movies with us on Saturday at 8 PM on the Groovy Doom Facebook page.

Up first — Invasion of the Blood Farmers!

Here’s a drink to enjoy while you watch!

Frozen Farmer Dew (taken from this recipe)

  • 2 oz. melon liqueur
  • 1 oz. triple sec
  • Mountain Dew
  • Pineapple juice
  1. Make ice cubes from one part Mountain Dew to two parts pineapple juice. Freeze.
  2. Blend ice cubes with melon liqueur and triple sec. Blend and serve.

You can watch this movie on Tubi or grab it from Severin.

Up next, it’s time for Malatesta’s Carnival of Blood!

That needs a drink too!

Bobo’s Carnival (taken from the Carnival Cruise Lines Twilight Zone)

  • 1 oz. rum
  • 1/2 oz. melon liqueur
  • 1 1/2 oz. cream of coconut
  • Blue curacao
  1. Blend all ingredients except for the blue curacao with ice until smooth.
  2. Float blue caracao on top of drink and enjoy.

You can watch this on Tubi and Shudder.

Double Argento on the Drive-In Asylum Double Feature!

We’re unleashing two astounding Argento films on you this Saturday at 8 PM on the Groovy Doom Facebook page.

Up first, Argento’s freakout devoted to orangutans, bug loving teenagers, women with deformed children and, as always, heads getting cut clean off. We could only be talking about Phenomena.

Inga and Jennifer

  • 1/2 oz. 99 Bananas
  • 3 oz. half and half
  • 1/2 oz. coconut rum
  • 1 1/2 oz. orange juice
  • 1/2 tsp. grenadine
  1. Pour all of the ingredients in a shaker and do your thing.
  2. Pour into a glass and enjoy.

We’re following this up with the most perfect of all Argento’s films, Suspiria!

Mother of Sighs

  • Jolly Ranchers (blue or red, come on, we are using the Argento color palette here)
  • Bottle of vodka
  • Sprite

Prep:

  1. Take 12 Jolly Ranchers and place them in an airtight container like a Mason jar.
  2. Pour in 2 cups of vodka and let sit overnight.
  3. As if by magic — “Susie, do you know anything about… witches?” — they will have dissolved by morning.

Drink recipe:

  1. Use 2 oz. of your Jolly Rancher vodka to 6 oz. of soda (you can also use sparkling water, club soda or ginger ale).
  2. Place in shaker with ice and shake it up.
  3. Serve and enjoy.

I’ve taken some photos of the process to make the infused vodka, which takes just a day. I’m really excited to try this one out.

Here’s where you can watch along!

Next week on the Drive-In Asylum Double Feature: SATAN!

Saturday, September 5 we’re showing two movies back at our normal time! Get ready for a double blast of demonic goodness, including one of the biggest Xerox versions of a film of all time and a movie that predates the slasher era.

See you on the Groovy Doom Facebook page!

Up first…Beyond the Door!

1974 was about a lot of things, but for us, it’s all about this beyond bonkers remix of another movie that you may have seen before that rhymes with The Exorcist. You can watch it on Tubi and Shudder (or grab the Arrow release, which is getting hard to find!).

Here’s something to drink during the movie!

Beyond the Door 4: The Cocktail (based on this recipe)

  • 1 1/2 oz. tequila
  • 3/4 oz. blue curaçao
  • 3/4 oz. lime juice
  1. Pour ingredients in a shaker with ice.
  2. Strain into a cocktail glass.

Our next movie is the absolutely insane The Redeemer: Son of Satan!

“From out of the darkness the hand of the Redeemer shall appear to punish those who have lived in sin… and return to the watery depths of Hell.” A movie that was made before slashers but is totally a slasher with a two-thumbed possessed priest and…look, this movie makes no sense. That’s why I love it. You can watch this on Amazon Prime and Tubi.

Here’s the cocktail that will help you make sense of it.

The Grim Reaper (which I got from here)

  • 1 oz. Kahlua (I have homemade stuff, but feel free to buy some)
  • 1 oz. rum
  • 1/2 oz. grenadine
  1. Pour the Kahula and rum together with some ice.
  2. Drip the grenadine in to make a blood effect.

See you Saturday at 8 PM on the Groovy Doom Facebook page!

Drive-In Asylum Matinee this Sunday!

Announcing a special Drive-In Asylum online event this Sunday, August 30 on the Groovy Doom Facebook page!

We’re having a matinee watch party at 4pm of the 1972 cannibalism family jam Terror House, featuring our special guest for the show Linda Gillen! Linda stars in the film as our final girl Regina, and she’ll be live on cam with us both before and after the movie. So come hang out in the chat, ask Linda some questions, and enjoy this unique precursor to a flick that came a few years later about a certain powertool massacre in Texas!

As a reminder, you can either choose to watch the film with your own copy or find it on YouTube. Here’s a link!

Here’s a drink recipe that we’ll be making on the show!

Regina on the Beach (modified from this recipe)

  • 1/2 oz. vodka
  • 1/2 oz. coconut rum
  • 1/2 oz. peach schnapps
  • 1 1/2 oz. pineapple juice
  • Dash of grenadine
  • 1/2 oz. heavy cream (or half and half, if you’re healthier)
  1. Pour everything into a shaker with ice.
  2. Shake it up like you’re beating a shark into oblivion.
  3. Pour into a glass and enjoy.

We can’t wait to see you — and Linda — this Sunday!

Head to the beach for next week’s Drive-In Asylum Double Feature!

You may have had to cancel your vacation this year, but next Saturday at 8 PM on Groovy Doom‘s Facebook page, we’ll take you to the ocean with two brutal assaults on humanity. Up first, 1978’s Slithis!

We don’t believe you have to drink during our show, but we do love sharing our recipes with you.

Nuclear Kool-Aid (from the book 11,000 Drinks by Paul Knorr)

  • 1 1/2 oz. Southern Comfort
  • 3/4 oz. amaretto
  • 1 oz. lemon-lime soda
  • 1 oz. cranberry juice cocktail
  1. Put it all in a shaker with ice. Do your thing and shake it.
  2. Strain over ice and enjoy.

Pretty simple, right? Well, get ready because we have another film and another drink to get you through it! Humanoids from the Deep!

Monster on the Beach (from the book 11,000 Drinks by Paul Knorr)

  • 1 1/2 oz. tequila
  • 2 oz. cranberry juice cocktail
  • Splash of lime
  • Splash of grenadine
  1. Shake it up with ice.
  2. Pour and enjoy!

We can’t wait to see you next week! Here are the links so you can watch the movies along with us!

Don’t forget to buy your issues of Drive-In Asylum on the Etsy store.

And Linda Gillen will be joining us for a special showing of Terror House on Sunday, August 30 at 4 PM!

It’s a double Amicus Drive-In Asylum Double Feature!

Next Saturday at 8 PM on the Groovy Doom Facebook, we’re watching two examples of the venerable Amicus anthology films!

Up first is the movie that promises — “Come to the asylum…to get killed!” That’s right, it’s the 1972 portmanteau Asylum!

As you may know by now, there’s a drink for every movie. Get ready to layer up the flavors in tribute to the multicolored suit made for Peter Cushing in this film’s strangest segment, “The Weird Tailor” with this drink recipe.

A Special Suit for Mr. Smith (based on this recipe)

  • 1 oz. grenadine
  • 1/2 oz. peach schnapps
  • 1 oz. coconut vodka
  • 1/2 oz. blue curaçao
  • 1 1/2 oz. pineapple juice
  1. Pour the grenadine into the bottom of your glass, then slowly spoon in ice cubes to create the bottom layer.
  2. In your shaker, combine some ice, peach schnapps and pineapple juice. Shake well.
  3. Slowly pour this over your grenadine to create the next layer.
  4. Clean shaker. Now, combine ice, coconut vodka and blue curaçao. Shake it up and then make the final layer of this rainbow-hued drink and don’t let any mannequins drink it.

How do we follow that one up? How about The House That Dripped Blood?

The drink for this film is based on the dark voodoo powers of young Jane Reid in the story “Sweets for the Sweet.” Watch out, Christopher Lee!

Jane’s Sweet Apple (based on the Sweet Candy Apple recipe from Paul Knor’s 11,000 Drinks)

  • 3/4 oz. Southern Comfort
  • 3/4 oz. Amaretto
  • 3/4 oz. melon liquor
  • 1/2 oz. grenadine
  • 2 splashes sweet and sour mix
  1. Combine all ingredients in your shaker, along with ice. Shake.
  2. Strain over ice and drink.

We’ll see you Saturday at 8 PM East Coast time. Want to watch along? Here are the links:

Are you ready for a Double Bigfoot Drive-In Double Feature?

This Saturday, August 8 at 8 PM — yes, 8/8/2020 at 8 PM, which feels like some kind of occult ritual is about to happen — we’ll be conjuring up two visions of the sasquatch, the yeti, the skunk ape…the Bigfoot!

Up first, 1974’s Shriek of the Mutilated!

Here’s a drink just perfect for draining while you watch people get, well, mutilated!

Yeti (here’s the site with the original recipe)

  • 1 1/2 oz. gin
  • 1/2 oz. blue Curaçao
  • 3 oz. lemonade (you can make it yourself or just go off the shelf)
  • Club soda
  • Lemon wedges
  • Ice
  1. Combine gin and the lemonade in a glass with ice.
  2. Add blue Curaçao and top with club soda.
  3. Stir using a mixing spoon and garnish with lemon wedges.

Up next, perhaps the most insane sasquatch movie of all time, 1980’s Night of the Demon, a movie that’s more slasher than monster movie.

Here’s the drink!

Sex in the Woods (it came from here)

  • 2 oz. moonshine flavor of your choice
  • 3/4 oz. peach schnapps
  • 1 1/2 oz. cranberry juice
  • 1 1/2 oz. orange juice
  1. Fill a big glass with ice.
  2. Pour all ingredients in the glass and stir.
  3. Boom. Done.

This Saturday’s Drive-In Asylum Double Feature

This weekend, we’re going back to the 80’s for two slashers. We have the links and recipes below so you can join us on Facebook Live Saturday at 8 PM East Coast time.

Up first is 1986’s Slaughter High, a movie that originally was called April Fool’s Day. It’s a revenge slasher with Caroline Munro and has some really inventive and fun kills. Here’s a drink that goes well with this movie (but you don’t need to drink to enjoy the time we have).

Killer Kool-Aid

  • 1 oz. vodka
  • 1/2 oz. amaretto
  • 1/2 oz. Midori or melon liquer
  • Craberry juice, to taste
  • Club soda, to taste
  1. Pour liquor ingredients into a glass filled with ice. Stir.
  2. Add cranberry to taste and stir again.
  3. Top with club soda and you’re done.

1981 slasher favorite Don’t Go In the Woods…Alone is our second movie and I can’t wait to watch it with everyone. I searched for a sweet drink that would go well with the bonkers nature of this one.

Forest Nymph

  • 1 1/2 oz. gin
  • 1/2 oz. Blue Curacao
  • 2 oz. pineapple juice
  • 2 oz. mango juice
  1. Pour all ingredients together over ice and stir. Pretty easy, really

You can watch both of these movies on Tubi:

Get ready for the Drive-In Asylum Double Feature Friday!

This week, we’re going to have a special Friday show!

Up first — Tourist Trap!

That’s right, in 1979, we found out that “every year young people disappear.” This PG-rated movie — yes, it still surprises us — is a favorite of Becca, who is actually coming on the show this week. Here’s a drink to enjoy during it.

Slausen Family Lemonade

  • 3 oz. coconut rum
  • 1 can coconut water (12 ounces)
  • 2 lemons
  • Dash of simple syrup
  • Ice
  1. This one is super simple. Make lemonade by juicing the lemons (if you’re in a pinch, you can just use pre-made lemonade). Simple syrup makes a sweeter taste than just plain sugar.
  2. This recipe is coconut-rich. So if you want less of a good thing, use water instead of coconut water. Me, I added a dash of Coco Real to make it even more coconutty. Is that a word?
  3. If you want to get really wild, use shaved or crushed ice. The colder this one is, the better. Also, you don’t ever need to drink during the movies, so you can make this without the rum.

To follow this strange movie, let’s turn to Herschell Gordon Lewis! Color Me Blood Red!

You’re going to need something, well, red to drink during this. We’ve got you covered.

Bloody Adam (based on this recipe, fixed as there were some strange measurements)

  • 1 oz. vodka
  • 1 oz. gin
  • 1/2 oz. cherry vodka
  • 3 oz. club soda
  • Splash of grenadine
  • Maraschino cherries (to taste)
  • Ice
  1. Fill your glass with ice until about half full.
  2. Pour in vodkas and gin, then top with club soda.
  3. Slowly add grenadine and cherries, as well as cherry juice to taste (and for how much “blood” you want in your cocktail).

You can watch both of these movies on Tubi:

Tourist Trap

Color Me Blood Red

Don’t forget — if you want to attend, Saturday night at the Riverside Drive-In in Vandergrift, PA will be a showing of The Car and Christine! We’ll be there. Will you?
