Week 10 (Aug 23 – 29) – Mill Creek’s Mausoleum of Mumblegore: The indie wing of low-budget horror or the horror wing of low-budget indie.
Night Howl dives deep into the fractured psyche of Kaci Evans (Michael Taylor Pritt, who also directed and wrote the movie), a socially awkward photojournalist grappling with the unresolved grief of his mother’s horrific childhood murder. Traumatized after witnessing a massive canine beast violently maul her, Kaci spends his adult life shackled to relentless night terrors and vivid flashbacks. As he undergoes therapy sessions with Dr. Ezay (Jeremy Wheeler), the boundaries begin to blur. Kaci is forced to confront a terrifying question: are these nocturnal disturbances merely manifestations of repressed trauma, or is a far more sinister reality bleeding into his waking life? And how can he allow someone like Ema (Alana Mullins) into his life when people are dying all around him?
This gets pretty dark by the end, but then you may not be able to get past the Spirit Store werewolf costume. But if you are, you get to watch one man’s vision of grief, trauma and lycanthropy. Also, his mom plays his mom and his wife is the receptionist. He’s used the same actors for nearly all his films. It’s certainly interesting, which is more than I can say for so many of the latest big-budget werewolf movies.
