Sizzlin’ Summer of Subterranean Psychotronica 2026: The Ketchup Vampires (1995)

Week 6 (July 26 – Aug 1) – Generic Cartoon Tapes

“Every day is Saturday Morning at this Jo-Ann Fabric. Every space is liminal in Sylvester’s head (hand-drawn for PS1)” – Scumbalina

Deep in the heart of Transylvania, a very different breed of bloodsucker calls a spooky castle home. Led by a vegetarian vampire named Maurice, along with Siefried, Margaret and Vampino, this nocturnal family has completely sworn off the jugulars of humanity in favor of a much sweeter, tangier alternative: tomato-based ketchup.

Living alongside a quirky scientist and his granddaughter Bella, these condiment-loving creatures just want to live in peace. However, their peaceful, Heinz-fueled existence is thrown into absolute chaos when old-fashioned, orthodox vampires roll into town determined to put an end to their condiment-swilling lifestyle and restore the terrifying traditions of the old country.

They’re led by Contessa Hilga, who is Margaret’s cousin and was once the fiancée of Maurice. She knows they have the book of Dracula, which can bring the powers of the undead back and get rid of these hamburger-topping-loving non-neck biters. There’s also an ancient Count and a prophecy that Vampino will be the most evil vampire of all.

What if I told you that a European animated television series that aired in the early 1990s was re-edited into feature-length movie packages for home video and they got Elvira to narrate it? And it was for kids, of course. There are two movies made from these episodes, but I barely made it through this one, even with an animated Cassandra Peterson.
