A nuclear holocaust—the Final War— has done wonders for the local leather industry. Society crumbles, governments fall, and suddenly everyone dresses to impress as they take to the radioactive dunes on dirt bikes, sporting asymmetrical mohawks, football pads, and half-masks.
Instead of a grizzled, Mel Gibson-esque road warrior wandering the wasteland, we get Harmony (Deborah Rennard, Sylvia Lovegren on Dallas), a crossbow-wielding, acrobatic survivalist who has had it up to here with everyone’s nonsense.
Her village has been unceremoniously flattened by a gang of motorcycle-riding thugs. While hiding out in a cave, she runs into Anderson (Garrick Dowden), a wounded survivor with a mysterious past and a massive target on his back, as he has a history with the local warlord, a metal-faced creep named Slater (Daniel Radell).
Slater looks like he could be in a KISS cover band, by the way.
Harmony and Anderson run into some diseased, unhinged cannibals trying to pass off human remains as deer meat. Naturally, Harmony finds the body pile in the outhouse and puts a quick end to that hospitality. They’re also being tracked by Purvis (Frank Garret), the big bad’s henchman, and make friends with Orland (Aykut Düz), who knows some Jawas and where to find a flamethrower.
After a series of captures, escapes, cave skirmishes and explosions, the trio manages to blow up an oil tanker, demolish the raiders’ fuel supply and collapse a bridge behind them. At a brisk 87 minutes, Land of Doom doesn’t pretend to reinvent the wheel. Shot in Turkey by director Peter Maris (Delirium, Terror Squad) from a script by Craig Rand—based on the novel by Peter Kotis—this is a fine-only movie they have left in the video store rental. But come on—there are so many better end-of-the-world movies.
