Sizzlin’ Summer of Subterranean Psychotronica 2026: Cult of the Cobra (1955)

Week 13 (Sept 13 – 19) – Cult Movies: Oh, you thought I meant the other kind of cult movies? Sacrifices to the gods of entertainment must be made, so hop up on the altar!

Before leaving Asia at the end of World War II, six American G.I.s — Paul (Richard Long), Tom (Marshall Thompson), Nick (James Dobson), Pete (William Reynolds), Rico (David Janssen) and Carl (Jack Kelly) — sneak into a forbidden ritual of the Lamians, who are worshipers of a cobra goddess. When a drunken Nick photographs the secret snake-woman dance, the cult discovers them and the High Priest places a deadly curse on the group. Once the men return to civilian life in the United States, a mysterious and alluring woman named Lisa Moya (Faith Domergue) enters their lives. One by one, the soldiers meet grisly ends preceded by the chilling shadow of a cobra and fatal venom, fulfilling the goddess’s vengeance.

As you can imagine, I would willingly let Faith Domergue bite my neck and kill me with snake venom.

All five of the film’s leading men went on to headline successful, long-running television series in the following decade:

  • Richard Long: The Big Valley
  • Marshall Thompson: Daktari
  • William Reynolds: The F.B.I.
  • Jack Kelly: Maverick
  • David Janssen: The Fugitive

I have a weakness for heroic men against killer cult women in black and white, so I loved this so much.
