88 FILMS BLU-RAY RELEASE: On the Run (1988)

In the gritty wake of his wife’s murder, honest cop Heung Ming (Yuen Biao) uncovers a rot of deep-seated corruption within the police force, forcing him to go on the run to survive. As he fights to stay one step ahead of both the law and the underworld hit squads gunning for him, his only lifeline is Chui (Pat Ha), a lethal and enigmatic assassin. Together, this unlikely pair must navigate the neon-lit, rain-slicked underbelly of Hong Kong, dodging capture, betrayal and certain death in a desperate bid for survival and justice.

Alfred Cheung directs and co-writes, steering away from the more comedic or lighthearted action vehicles that dominated Hong Kong cinemas in the mid-1980s. This film is notable for its uncompromising darkness, offering a stark, cynical look at institutional corruption and the heavy toll of vengeance.

Extras on the 88 Films Blu-ray include a rigid slipcase with new art by Sean Longmore; commentary with Kenneth Brorsson and Phil Gillon of the Podcast On Fire Network; another commentary with Asian film experts Frank Djeng and FJ DeSanto; interviews with Alfred Cheung and David West; an alternate ending and a Hong Kong trailer.
