Week 8 (Aug 9 – 15) – Trash-Mex picks
Hey, Mario Almada was in over 300 movies, someone’s gotta help us find the good ones! Since 2010 Armando Hernandez has been one of the only people discussing Mexican genre pictures through his website trashmex dot com and the Trash-Mex podcast with co-host Joey Diaz. There’s ORO AUTÉNTICO on this list!
Imagine a chaotic, blood-soaked Mexican spin on Ghostwatch. A television crew, a medium, a friar and a killer with regrets lock themselves inside an abandoned hotel where a string of prostitutes was brutally murdered back in the 1950s. It starts as an investigative true crime show but quickly spirals out of control, as it turns out that the location is genuinely haunted. An ancient demonic entity soon possesses the friar, kicking off a chaotic rampage of possessions, exorcisms and relentless carnage. Could this be Amityville Mexicano? I wish.
The tone swings wildly from an eerie, dreadful atmosphere to awkward, darkly comedic moments, such as a bizarre possession happening right at the peak of an orgasm. Roberto Ballesteros steals the movie as the host of the show, one who refuses to stop filming, remaining an unrepentant, self-absorbed asshole to everyone around him even as his colleagues bleed, vomit blue fluid and get possessed. Even when he comes up against demons, he gives no fucks. I mean, people are dying in acid baths!
This movie is charitably a mess, but I would rather watch stuff like this than anything made this year.
