EDITOR’S NOTE: Crucible of Horror was on Chiller Theater on Saturday, April 28, 1973 at 11:30 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 1975 at 11:30 p.m., Saturday, November 22, 1975 at 11:30 p.m. and Saturday, September 9, 1978 at 11:30 p.m.

Walter Eastwood is the kind of domestic tyrant nightmares are made of. Played with chilling, razor-edged malice by Michael Gough (best remembered as Alfred Pennyworth in the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher Batman films), Walter has spent years physically and mentally terrorizing his wife, Jane (Yvonne Mitchell) and his daughter, Jane, while systematically molding his son into a carbon copy of his abusive cruelty. Fed up with living as prisoners in their own home, mother and daughter decide to do what any of us would under the circumstances: they kill him.

The only problem? Walter won’t stay dead.

Originally released as The Velvet House and The Corpse, this British psychological thriller plays out as a low-budget, macabre riff on Les Diaboliques. Shot on a shoestring, the film relies heavily on atmosphere, pacing, and powerhouse performances rather than lavish set pieces.

What elevates the movie above standard 1970s exploitation is its incredible cast pedigree. Yvonne Mitchell and Michael Gough were both highly accomplished stage veterans, with Gough famously lending his aristocratic menace to a slew of classic British horror films. Adding a fascinating layer of real-life family dynamics to the onscreen dysfunction, the Eastwood children—Rupert and Jane—are played by Michael Gough’s real-life son, Simon Gough, and Simon’s fiancée at the time, Sharon Gurney. In a bit of trivia that makes the family tree even weirder, the two were actually married by the time the film finally saw the light of day.

It’s rough around the edges, but thanks to Gough’s wonderfully detestable villainy and a grim, inescapable tension, Crucible of Horror is pretty decent.
