Woodsboro always finds a way to bring people back. This time, Scream 7 brings back franchise architect Kevin Williamson, back in the director’s chair alongside co-writer Guy Busick. This seventh installment leans heavily into its rich history while building a brand-new chapter for our ultimate final girl, bringing back the genre icons we grew up watching alongside a fresh crop of talent navigating the blood-soaked streets of Pine Grove, Indiana.
The film kicks off in classic style at the infamous abandoned home of Stu Macher, where eager Stab fans Scott (Jimmy Tatro) and Madison (Michelle Randolph) meet a fiery end at the hands of Ghostface. Meanwhile, miles away in Pine Grove, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has finally forged a peaceful existence. She runs a local coffeehouse, shares her life with police chief Mark Evans (Joel McHale) and raises her children—including her teenage daughter Tatum (Isabel May), named in honor of Sidney’s late, irreplaceable best friend Tatum Riley.
Peace never lasts long in the world of slasher cinema. Sidney receives a terrifying call from a scarred, aged voice claiming to be a surviving Stu Macher, setting off a chain reaction that targets young Tatum. As the body count rises, including chilling attacks on Tatum’s friends Hannah (Mckenna Grace) and Lucas (Asa Germann), plus the return of Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding), the terror hits home.
When Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) steps in to help, the mystery unravels into a twisted web involving institutionalized patients, deepfaked identities and obsession, as the new Ghostface seeks to use Sidney’s lifelong trauma to mold Tatum into a new final girl.
After Melissa Barrera was fired from the film’s production in November 2023 due to her pro-Palestinian comments, calls to boycott the film began to circulate on social media. First organized by grassroots Scream fans, the boycott has been supported by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, Film Workers for Palestine, CodePink, the Democratic Socialists of America and other organizations. Then, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and subsequent director Christopher Landon all left, which then led to original writer Kevin Williamson stepping behind the camera to direct his very first film in the franchise he created. Scream 7 also marks monumental returns and cameo appearances from horror royalty, like Matthew Lillard, who reprises his iconic role as Stu Macher, alongside Scott Foley returning as Roman Bridger and Laurie Metcalf stepping back in as Nancy Loomis through hallucinatory and televised psychological warfare, amongst others (spoilers, you know).
This does have something to say about AI and seems like it’s trying to go in a new direction. As you may have read, Scream movies aren’t really my speed, but this is a quick and innocuous slasher. Sometimes, that’s enough.
