Week 3 (July 5 – 11) – Maverick Entertainment Group
One of the most overlooked and consistent low-budget film companies of the 21st century, they’ve been full steam ahead in the streaming era while other indies have cratered. From the Maverick Entertainment Group website:
Founded in 1997, Maverick continues to be a leading distributor and producer of niche independent and Black Cinema content. Having released more than 1,300 films over the past 26 years, Maverick currently distributes the world’s largest library of feature-length Black Cinema.
Directed by Anike Bay, James McFarland, and Chan C. Smith, Girls Like Us is a drama that navigates the high-stakes emotional tightrope of a double life. At its center is Keisha (Robin Lei), a successful attorney who is keeping a massive secret from her friends and family: she is juggling two intense, competing relationships.
On one side, there is the status quo life she is expected to lead: a relationship with Greg (Anthony Phillips), a gynecologist who is actively pushing for marriage and the kind of politically correct stability that society demands of her. On the other hand, there is her secret, passionate affair with an author named Zoi (Bethany Stanton).
Zoe wants Keisha to commit and leave her life with Greg behind, while Greg’s domestic pressure reaches a breaking point. Keisha is forced to confront the reality that she cannot sustain these two lives forever and has to decide whether to pursue the love of her life or succumb to the expectations of her professional and social circles.
This is a movie that literally has the lesbian police and a character named Kiki, an older fabulous lesbian who gets up on stage at Keisha’s birthday, in front of all of her family and friends, just before Greg proposes, and talks about how much she likes to fist people. I could have cared less about anyone else. Just give me a movie about Kiki.
You can watch this on Tubi.
