Failure to Launch (2006)

If you guessed that this was one of the movies that Becca picks instead of me, you’ve been reading our site for too long.

Tom Dey had quite the career going on. He started his directing career making commercials for Ridley Scott’s company before his first big hit, 2000’s Shanghai Noon. He followed that with the 2002 Eddie Murphy/Robert DeNiro team-up Showtime before he took four years off and made this one.

He took another four years off before making Marmaduke, then hadn’t directed anything until 2018, when he worked on three episodes of the TV series Snatch.

Tripp (Matthew McConaughey) is never leaving home, to the worry of his parents (Terry Bradshaw and Kathy Bates). After all, his two best friends (Bradley Cooper and Justin Bartha) are living the same life. When Tripp gets sick of a girl, he brings her home to meet his parents and then starts all over again.

That’s when they bring in an expert — Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker), who specializes in getting men to move out of their parent’s houses (witness her winning over Patton Oswalt in the film). Of course, her love life is just as messy.

Everything happens as you’d expect. They really fall in love, one of Tripp’s friends hooks up with Paula’s roommate Kit (Zooey Deschanel, playing another manic pixie role) and the couple sails away together at the end.

If you’d like to watch this, you should visit us. Becca will watch it whenever the opportunity presents itself.
